Jack Peters was born August 10, 1937 in Grosse Ile, Michigan to Edward
and Ellen (Saari) Peters and passed away June 9, 2017 in Salem, Missouri
at the age of seventy-nine years.
Jack honorably served in The United States Navy from November 14, 1955
until October 27, 1957. Jack Peters was united in marriage to Lois Dianne
Heikkinen on November 7, 1959 in Marquette, Michigan. Jack graduated
from Michigan State University in 1963 with a Bachelor's Degree in Parks
and Recreation Administration. He worked for Michigan State Parks for 3
summers while attending college and became Assistant Park Manager at
Interlocken State Park before joining the National Park Service in 1965.
Jack was the first Park Ranger at Ozark National Scenic Riverways upon
his arrival in 1967. He left the park service in 1976 to become co-director
of Camp Zoe and became the owner of Running River Canoe Rental in
He was an avid hunter for many years and also enjoyed horseback riding,
at one time owning 65 horses between Camp Zoe and Ozark Homestead
Riding Stables, located at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. In addition, he
owned Peters' Trucking Company, operating 3 trucks and drivers. Jack
retired from truck driving to become fully active in the management of
Running River Canoe Rental and Mini-Mart. Being an active member of his
community, Jack was one of the charter members of the Timber Volunteer
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Steve Peters; brother,
Raymond Peters; father and mother in law, Eino and Laina Heikkinen; and
brother in law, Roy Bakkila.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Peters, Salem; children, Vicki Monnig and
husband, Joe, Farmington, Joni Light and husband, Barry, Farmington;
brother, Thomas Peters and wife, Mary Jo, Bad Axe, Michigan; sisters,
Mary Ellen "Cookie" Bakkila, Chassell, Michigan, Susan Vollmar and
husband, Jim, Chassell, Michigan; grandchildren, Bradley Light,
Springfield, Andrew Monnig, Farmington, Jamie Light, Farmington; several
nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial service for Jack Peters was held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at
the Shannondale Community Church with Rev. Jeff Fulk officiating, a
special tribute was given by the National Park Service. Interment will be at a
later date, arrangements under the direction of Wilson Mortuary, Salem.
